This morning, unfortunately, I felt like reading the newspaper. The very first page of Times of India(Bangalore Edition), the center of the page eye capturing article, infuriated me beyond tolerance limits. It is an article about Lady( I feel this is the most dignified form of addressing us) Bartenders. I definitely am not localised in my outlook and do not say it is not our cultural heritage to be a bartender. I believe each person has her/his own fundamental rights to an appropriate choice of livelihood. But in the process, bargaining on dignity, self prestige and virtuosity surely strikes a chord from deep within. Following is an excerpt from the article:
TIMES VIEW
The Karnataka high court’s decision is in tune with changing times and more than welcome. This paper has been campaigning for abolition of some archaic laws pertaining to urban lifestyle. The plain argument against Rule 9 of the Karnataka Excise Act was that if women could break many other male career bastions, why not one in the hospitality industry. Nevertheless, the onus must be on the hotel managements to ensure a safe environment for women bartenders.
Yes very true, hospitality industry can have ladies, no issues over that. It wholly is centralised to an individual's will. But I strongly feel The ToI is altercating its own so called rights to liberation views with the following paradoxical cartoon.
This cartoon, does it show true hospitality, or cheap publicity of a women’s body on sale? I don’t say women have to worshipped next to god or that they should be treated as a precious abberation with the utterly delicate care and concern. However, there is a fine hair line difference between looking appealing in tandem with most recent couture and looking vulgar. The former commands some dignity of thought and action while the latter just gives a come-fornicate-me picture. Just tell me, If a lady bartender wears an outfit as painted above, will it render ‘hospitality’ or accrual of hormones to the bar visitors( after few rounds of imbibing, they would hardly have control over their senses)? It is indeed a matter of shame and disgust that such a leading newspaper should have such a despicable sales promotion technique.

I too agree. it's really sad that a high court has passed such a verdict.
U can even expect the govt to proclaim this as an achievement under EQUAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN . This is no hospitality. It's just a license to those corrupt ppl to indulge in attrcting customers with women. FOD save those woman who dare to join this dangerous business
Greetings; and thanks for dropping in. Shall be only too glad to welcome you again. :)
Guess this is my first time here too..? And what an article to chance upon. :D Heh heh heh...
Here is what I make of that. If a lady bartender was to be in duty with 'that' outfit, well... She is being 'very hospitable', 'inviting' etc. etc. And she can make some extra money too... In the process, the pub she works in will probably have more customers. (I hope no one is offended by that! I like to speak my head-off...)
I agree with you... It is but a shame. Initially, I thought TOI was being sarcastic with that depiction... But on second thought, sadly, it is not so. Especially, with that write-up they have.
Peace, and have a nice day.
@sowri
yeah. true. GOD shd save them
@kartz
Feel free to say anything :) thanks for visiting :)
hmmm. disturbing indeed. But this is jus one of many.
oh yes preeti, you have picked the thing tht bothered me as well when i read the same news.
but we do not know of the truth of the profession as well. only they know who do it.
anyways, it was real nice to read you and you have got a blog over here:)
Thanx for dropping in n taking time to key down a comment.
Hi Preeti,
I certainly dont understand why there is so much fuss about the way the cartoonic figure is dressed. Isint this the kind of attire that are worn even by our news anchors on private news channels.
Forgive for being explicit, but there is not even an indication of cleavage or other titillating stuff on display..Maybe u got misled by the lipstick and the long nails.
P.S. I have always believed a women looks sexy not by the clothes she wears but rather by her body language etc...
@richa
my pleasure:) thanks for visiting:)
@ramanathan
well, we percieve it differently. What i feel is, the write up contradicts the cartoon. It definitely ,according to me, does not look decent or dignified. comment taken in the right sense. thanks for being open I appreciate that :)
heyy,Well Written!
keep up the good work!
:-)
@Preethi,
i do agree that decency is a very subjective term but some how there must be some common ground between the colliding school of thoughts
i still refuse to accept the fact that the picture is an offensive one and if u really term it as offensive then probably u will find content most tv channels extremely offensive, let alone the moviedom which is notches ahead in terms of skin show to tv.
let me get really crude... in the past women were restricted to only wearing sarees and nothing else would do.. as time progressed chudis gained acceptability among the masses and it became the attire of choice of both girls and working women..now if u look back to the days where sarees ruled the roost a women wearing a chudi would have been looked down and probably in some extreme cases may be even ostracized...so the point i wish to bring home is that as society progresses acceptability regimes change as well and what might have been lurid then is not now...
having said this, i do wish to add that i dont condone skin show and it must be detested with all the might we have. but at the same time u cant just say that something is indecent just because it looks so to you. after ur reply i stared at it ,again,for one whole minute and still could not find anything incriminatory...
p.s. guys and girls ...i urge to take one more good look at the pic and tell me what exactly that u find vulgar abt it that u dont find in main stream media...
@Palaniappan
Hey man... Well, agreed. Change is part of life. No doubt.
The thing is... The mind. How people perceive. See... I am one fellow who ll let ppl do whatever they want. Their life, their wish. But then... Imagine a pub/bar... It is not one of those places where you can 'socialise nicely' but well... The pic reminded me of a scene in the movie "Dus Kahaaniyaan", which is very much possible today...
Inebriety... Can do 'wonders'... People who have watched that movie I just mentioned can relate to the scene I was talking about. Coming back to inebriety... Well, that's what I wanted to touch upon.
Yes, women do wear such outfits these days. It does not bother me. And being a teetotaller myself, I'm not quite bothered about what she ends up wearing in pubs or anywhere for that matter!
It's just that the article and the cartoon are pretty much a paradox to one another. As I had mentioned in an earlier comment, it may have been for the sake of sarcasm too. But not quite, I guess.
Peace.
PS: I don't wish to get into the 'sexy' stuff. Quite frankly, I have never understood what that word means. Thinking of writing a post about it one day... Ah well... Good day people.
@ramanathan
Wow, I like this blog fight dude :) ok i'm gonna attempt to convey what i had actually meant. I do not care how the media girls dress up. Its in their own PERSONAL interests. And the thing that really bothered me was not modern attire or let me put it flat, I dont care eve if girls serve in the bar in a bikini. I mean its totally an individual's wish. If that is their idea of looking sexy and getting more money, as kartz rightly said, not my problem. What concerns me is the CONTRADICTION between the write up of the newspaper and the cartoon. I felt the cartoon looks voluptuous ( it is not necessary to show off cleavages to look vulgar), and lacks dignity. Two wrongs never make a right. Media is polluted beyond reparation, and this cartoon is an ADDITIONAL pebble to the ocean of pollution. Thats , I think is what i was trying to convey. Thanks ram and its real fun replying to your comments :)
@kartz
thanks for catching my wavelength of thoughts :) Had the write up been a little not in favour of the whole issue, I mean against women into this profession, sarcasm would have been the case, according to me too. But now, I think otherwise.
hmmm but i still feel that there is no contradiction between the write up and the picture...haha we have agreed to disagree...
if u do have gtalk give me an add and we can discuss this and more altruist.anand@gmail.com
@Palaniappan
:D Agreed to disagree! Well said, bro'!

Hey, why always this "save woman" chants ?
generally inferior people only call for the save chants.
I believe and hope None is inferior and every one is as good.
When u need to prove it, stop using the LADY clause..
FIGHT for the RIGHTS and earn them in the hard way..
keep arguing we are good not gonna take any one any where...
@sss
oi, at no point in this post i have the save women thingy. I jus have a problem with the contradiction between the picture and write up, I am bored of reiterating :)
definitely if tat is the way women are dressed as bartenders then it does not serve hospitality even a bit.. in fact its a shame to it..
@sachin
